Handy Firefox add-ons that everyone should have!
in Misc by Code It Red on June 14th, 2008
There are already millions of users making the switch to the more powerful browser, Firefox, however one of the many great features of Firefox is that it can be even further modified and customized to the user’s liking. Today we have a look at some of the fantastic Firefox add-ons that really just add those ‘finishing touches’ to your favorite browser!
First of all, let me start of by saying that all of the mentioned extensions in this post are extensions and add-ons that I find very handy. Constantly being around the web and coding new things, I find it very hard to do my daily routine at a computer that doesn’t have all of my saved add-ons and extensions installed into Firefox, let alone Firefox itself! For those of you who are reading this and are sitting in a puzzled state bewildered by this magical term, “Firefox”, here is the link: download Firefox - the better web browser. And also as a side note — the new later release of Firefox 3, will be released out of the beta soon and you should all keep your eyes open!
The order of the list below is in alphabetical order and does not represent the importance or significance of each of the add-ons.
1. Adblock Plus - by Wladimir Palant

Unfortunately, today, it’s hard to avoid pesky ads and banners whilst we browse the internet. Thankfully, there has been an excellent add-on for Firefox which helps a lot and eradicates most if not all ads that you can find. It also has the option to further block various elements and media at the users discretion. One thing that I like about Adblock Plus, is that it has some nice built in definitions which mean that users will begin to feel the full power of advertisement-less browsing immediately!

2. Firebug - by Joe Hewitt, Firebug Working Group

Well, where should I begin? Firebug integrates almost seamlessly with Firefox to open a door to a whole new world of web development. With Firebug, you can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page. This extension has also become more and more famous for its extremely useful ‘inspect’ feature which is handy for all developers. I personally can’t imagine how many hours this nice little add-on has saved me.

3. FireFTP - by Mime Cuvalo

One of the best things about FireFTP is that it is essentially its own FTP program. As a result, it makes for an extremely lightweight and easy-to-use application with its very nice interface. I love to use FireFTP for those times where you need to make just a small quick change to a website - all you have to do is install the add-on, light some matches and watch the fire!

4. Stumbleupon - by StumbleUpon

Today, Stumbleupon has become one of the largest social bookmarking sites out there. Its unique designing and architecture makes it really worthwhile exploring. Using this nice extension it is possible to implement some of Stumbleupon’s great functions into its very own toolbar.

5. Web Developer - by Chris Pederick

Again, one of the best add-ons that a developer could ever need! The Web Developer extension for Firefox adds a new toolbar with a HUGE range of tools and functions. One function of this extension that I find in particular extremely useful is the ‘resize’ tool. What it does it resize the actual window of Firefox into set proportions (you can setup your own sizing). This is great for web designers as it allows you to see how your site will look like under different resolutions!

Now that you have a few add-ons for Firefox, it’s up to you to go out and get some more. The real beauty of Firefox is that everyone’s installation in unique and there are no add-ons that everyone “must” install. It really does depend on what you intend to do with Firefox and who you are as a person. Have any really good extensions or add-ons that you want to share? Simply write a comment so that everyone can see it. After all, sharing is caring!

Though Adblock Plus is a very useful addon, I have ethical issues about it.
Lets accept that a great amount of content on the web is offered free of change to the vistor. So how does a website or the author get compensated for his efforts? If you block ads, you are harming his site revenue.
Lets not be too selfish to save few KB’s of bandwidth, until it causes performance issues such as 100% CPU usage and freezing while playing flash or leaky javascript or those video ads.
